About Hoedspuit

Welcome to our “About Hoedspruit” page. Explore this magnificent area and all it has to offer.

A small friendly town near Kruger Park. One of those rare places where people still care about each other and take the time to keep in touch.

Hoedspruit is fast becoming the chosen destination for investors and those seeking a change to the hectic lifestyle that most families live today. Read all about Hoedspruit and its attractions and facilities under the “Useful Information” drop down tab.

Situated close to the world renowned Kruger National Park and within the Kruger2Canyon Biosphere, Hoedspruit is recognised for its abundance and variety of fauna and flora. Hoedspruit is an easy 4.5 hour drive from Johannesburg, O R Tambo airport, Sandton and Pretoria, through some interesting and varied scenery.

For those driving down to the Lowveld, you head out towards Belfast, Dullstroom, Lydenburg and Ohrigstad. Hoedspruit is about an hour and a half further.   Once through the Abel Erasmus Tunnel, you can actually feel yourself relax and start to breath the fresh air of this magnificent part of the country.

Hoedspruit’s Eastgate Airport usually has daily flights in and out. Obviously, with Covid-19, these have been restricted. The airport is just 7 kms (3 miles) from town. There has been talk for years of upgrading Hoedspruit to International Airport status. However, we have been advised that there can only be one International Airport per Province. Hard to understand why Polokwane should be that one when Hoedspruit is the hub of Lowveld Tourism. Only time will tell – and some dedicated people to take up the challenge with Government.

There are a number of Wildlife Estates that offer both luxury and security. You’ll be hard-pressed to find another lifestyle where you can take life at the pace you set and still have the peace of mind that you are bringing up your children in an environment that is safe and secure.

The local farmers produce some amazing fruit and vegetables and these are readily available in town.

There is so much to see and do. The Big 5 are on your doorstep. The Northern Drakensberg Mountains offer some of the most spectacular scenery and sunsets seen in Southern Africa. The Panorama Route is something not to be missed. Places with names such as God’s Window, Bourkes Luck Potholes, Blyde River Canyon and Dam, and the various waterfalls such as Mac-Mac, Bridal Veil, Horseshoe, Berlin and Lisbon, simply invite you to explore. If at first you don’t feel like exploring alone, experienced tourism operators and friendly locals are always willing to assist you.

A regular question goes around the prevalence of Malaria. The town status changed in January 2019 to “Medium Risk”.    Precautions against being bitten should be taken.   Insect spray, cover ankles and wrists at dusk and dawn and make use of a mosquito net or fan in the bedroom at night.

Hoedspruit is only 85 kms from the Phalaborwa Gate and 65 kms from Orpen Gate of the Kruger National Park. Graskop, Pilgrims Rest, Sabie, Tzaneen, Hazyview, White River and Nelspruit are nearby towns worth visiting.

Hoedspruit Reptile Park and the Kapama Cheetah Breeding Project are very interesting. Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre is a great outing for the whole family. We are sure that, from the list below, you will find lots to keep you busy or places to simply relax.

One of the most successful initiatives has been the Hoedspruit Farmers Market. Held once a month on the first Saturday, it has grown from humble beginnings to be one of the most successful in the country. Not just someone to go and browse, it has become a catch phrase “see you at Farmers”. Most residents make it a morning out, meeting friends for coffee or breakfast. Lunches are also served.

A number of amazing Artists have made Hoedspruit their home. Of particular note is Vanessa Lomas. You can see some of her work here

For anyone wishing to eat out and experience a large variety of different places and tastes, Hoedspruit definitely will not disappoint.
